So Bernadette

I’m so excited about the Big Bang Theory Knitalong hosted by Shannon of Luvinthemommyhood for all of us Big Bang Theory fans.  The timing was perfect since I’d just gotten a few skeins of Aran in Gynx Yarns’ discontinued organic merino.  It’s the bamboo colorway and is quickly becoming Hetty, a cropped cardigan that is extremely Bernadette.

The funny thing is I always think of Bernadette when I peruse Andi Satterlund’s cropped sweater patterns.  I’ve been wanting to make one of her designs for a couple of years but hadn’t gotten around to it, so I think the time is now.

I didn’t really start until Nov. 2 and it is moving along quickly.  The construction is different from any I’ve tried.  At least I think so.  I have now joined the fronts with the back to work back and forth from the arms down.  My camera just wouldn’t capture the tonal shifts in this semi-solid green.  It is so vibrant!

The Knitalong officially began on October 31 since BBT usually has a good Halloween episode.  Check out Heather’s collection of BBT related sweaters and accessories.  Since I’ve had Sexy Vesty in my queue for a long time, and since it is very Penny, I’ll probably make it too.  I so want to do something Howard-ish.  His outfits make me cringe, but something inspired by him would be very fun.  However, my queue is a mile long, so the Bernadette sweater and a Penny Vest it is.

I wanted my Bernadette double as a NaKniSweMo (National Knit a Sweater Month) project too, but after some sketchy math, I realized it isn’t 50,000 stitches.  So no organized nakniswemo for me.  It’s not like I need another KAL.  Lately, every month has been Knit a Sweater Month, and I’m enjoying the Big Bang KAL anyway.  I’ve even ordered Season 1 to watch the episodes in order from the beginning.

If you knit, even if it’s just sort-of, join us in the Big Bang Theory knitalong.  Heather has several small accessory patterns that were worn by cast members or you can go all the way, like Amy Farrah Fowler, and make a cardigan to go under your cardigan.

  1. Heh, a month in and you're further along than I am. I'm having a heck of a time with the lace pattern. But I'm sort of not liking the pattern so much – it's pretty, but I don't think it's me. It's on hold for now and I'll see what I think later. I've cast on another sweater that I've wanted for about 6 months already!

And I'm only babbling about this because you actually commented on my rav project post. 😀 I hope this works out better for you than for me. Looks like you're doing great with it though. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

  2. The lace doesn't look as good now as it will when it's blocked and stretched out. I really like it so far.

  3. Yeah, I have a swatch blocked and hanging on my inspiration board, and you're right, the lace looks much better blocked. But the pattern reminds me too much of butterflies, and while I like the insect, I don't really like them in my wardrobe. lol I didn't really notice it until I swatched, but I ignored it, telling myself it's a zigzag. It's not really working though.

    It's a gorgeous pattern, I just don't think it'll work for me. 🙂

  4. That cardigan looks gorgeous. I also started the Hetty some time ago but left it laying around when I was at the same point you are now. I think I didn't love the color so much to be able to continue struggling with the lace. And I have more urgent projects right now so it will have to wait. I wish I had the time to join the KAL but Christmas presents come first.

I really want to see both projects on you. I always wanted to make that vest, it's beautiful.

  5. It's looking wonderful! The green is so great. I had Sexy Vesty in my queue for a while, but thought I wouldn't wear it. I can't wait to see what yours looks like (since you've convinced me to re-queue so many things already! ;])!

  6. Thanks, Vanessa! It's very cathartic, knitting from the old end of the queue. I've been trying to kind of organize mine lately. I was doing this KAL and looking for anything on it that would be BBT appropriate. This seems very Penny to me, so I'm going to try to cast on today. If it fits right, I would probably wear it much more than heavier sweaters.
