My first car had an eight track player. So, I stuck homemade mix tapes into an adapter that stuck into the eight track player and bounced up and down as I drove down the highway. Every few songs it would work it’s way out of the player and I’d whack it back in, like Fonzie, and the tunes played on.
My friends knew if I was going to cart them all over the place, there was only one rule: I controlled the radio, and my musical tastes were all over the place.
That meant high schoolers were made to bear Beethoven or Native American flute music; headbangers… The Mamas and The Papas; Country loving girls… techno. And Everyone hated Kate Bush.
When I got my second car (an Eclipse) with a cassette player, I imagined myself speeding down the highway to U2’s “Numb” or something like that. It’s funny the the things we value when we’re young. For me, it wasn’t gas mileage or safety, it was stereo and stick shift.
Anyway, these are a few songs I loved to drive to from different times in my younger days. I feel twentyish every time I hear them.

You have good musical taste! I always admire someone who listens to different genres. Although I'm partial to The Shins, Black Keys, Nirvana, etc., I have been known to sneak in some Patsy Cline or Beethoven. And I so remember the 8-track! Bob Seger got played the most and I can't stand his music now! Love Beck…Nightmare Hippy Girl is one of my faves!!!!
Thanks, April. I took it while driving- not really a good idea- but I knew if I didn't do it then, I'd forget to take one at all. I went through all of my mix tapes yesterday and got nostalgic. I don't even have a radio that will play them, but I think I'll make some Grooveshark playlists of the songs for fun.
Gail, I've never heard The Shins, though everyone else loves them. I'm going to have to try them. And I never would've pegged you as a Nirvana fan. My husband loved Nirvana and now the Foo Fighters. Funny how revealing our playlists can be.
Haha, Nirvana was my fave band of the 90s. Kurt Cobain was, no "is", high on my list of great artists. The only song I have liked by the Foo Fighters is Everlong. That was an awesome song. Hope you get a chance to listen to The Shins.
